The sun was shining as we left the café, and it occurred to me that we could walk down to the river and take a ferry across to France or Germany in a matter of minutes. Alex could escape from the bank, and I could escape from thoughts of Marina. Or I could try.

In any event, that was not to happen. As we rounded the corner to Barfüsserplatz, the clock on top of the main post office struck 2:00 PM. Time for my matinee performance.

Alex had made me repeat Didier’s account code and password at least twenty times. If I got it wrong, there was no one to blame but myself. I squared my shoulders, lifted my chin, tugged down my jacket and pushed through massive brass doors into a place where time had come to a complete standstill sometime around the turn of the century; the last century.

The bank was old-fashioned, emphasis on old—fashion had deserted it a long time ago. I walked slowly across the black-and-white patterned marble floors and took in my surroundings. Its high ceilings seemed higher still, lit as they were by dim, hanging globe lights that cast ominous shadows far into the corners. A huge, carved wooden desk faced the main door and was flanked on either side by tall brass plant stands topped by towering intertwined snake plants. An omen?
